A new study of the European project SOPHIE detects a poorer health in women in comparison with men in European countries with family policies less oriented to gender equality.
The study have analysed data from 26 European countries, extracted from the European Social Survey 2010.
The Southern European countries, with traditional family policies, show the highest gender inequalities in health. A 39% of women in these countries stated to have poor health, compared to 30% of men.
In the Eastern European countries, supporting a highly gendered division of domestic labour, 52% of men and 61% of women reported poor health.
This study generates new knowledge about the relationship between gender equality related policies and health inequalities in Europe.
