On 13 May, 10 amateur cyclists set off from Edinburgh towards London. Last weekend they arrived back where they started, having cycled over 1,100 miles and taken in each of the five capitals of the UK and Ireland.
The aim of the Great Big Cycle was to raise much-needed funds for the charity Cystinosis Foundation UK, which currently supports research taking place at the University of Sunderland, into treatments for the rare genetic condition, cystinosis.
Pharmaceutical researchers at the University’s Sciences Complex are developing life saving drugs used to treat cystinosis. There is still no cure for the condition which occurs when the body’s mechanism to remove excess cystine (an amino acid) breaks down, leading to kidney problems and eventually affecting other organs, until very recently it was rare for patients to live beyond the age of 20.
