Since September 2014, a relevant group of operators, SIM vendors, and OEMs have been jointly working towards the implementation of a truly interoperable approach to eSIM, which will benefit the final consumers by enabling their freedom of choice for devices and operators. The group has been deeply involved in creating a technical definition, which guarantees the interoperability of the eSIM-powered devices with any operator, SIM Vendor, and any platform provider.
Currently the workgroup is composed of América Móvil, Ooredoo, Telefónica and China Unicom as global operators; Huawei, LG, Samsung and Sony Mobile as OEMs; and Gemalto, Giesecke & Devrient, Morpho, Oberthur Technologies, STMicrolectronics and Valid as SIM vendors.
As a result of this joint effort, on the 5th of February 2015 the first technical definition of an operator Interoperable Profile Package (IPP) was released to the industry representatives (GSMA members and SIM Alliance) to allow any industry player to take part in this initiative in an open and transparent manner. This definition of an operator profile package enables an interoperable deployment of eSIM for everyone, fosters the innovation and the development of value added services on top of the SIM matching GSMA business principles and enabling the use of existing infrastructures and network equipment to ease the adoption of current scenarios.
Consumer oriented use-cases have also been defined and are about to be tested in the coming weeks, both globally and locally, to ensure that the proposed solution gives full coverage to every region and type of customer, regardless of their operator and device of choice.
“The GSMA Consumer Remote SIM Provisioning initiative is leading and coordinating industry activities with a number of complementary “proofs of concept” streams, which together are contributing to the development of an end to end remote SIM solution. These have been designed to help shape the best technical specification for the mobile industry as well as for consumers.”
“Results are expected in Q3 2015 with the delivery of a common specification for the remote provisioning of consumer devices anticipated by 2016.”
As part of this GSMA initiative, top Industry players have joined forces to foster the adoption of eSIM technology into consumer devices in a way which protects consumers and guarantees their freedom of choice.
